Kate Starbird is the
1997 Naismith Award winner as the nation's top
college women's basketball player...Was
named player of the year by Rawlings, the WBCA,
RCA, the Pac-10 and The Sporting News, and was
the top vote-getter for the AP All-America team...
Scored 20.9 PPG, 3.7 RPG and 3.2 APG and shot 51
percent as a senior...Re-established her own Pac-10
single season scoring record of 753 points while
leading the team to their third straight NCAA
Final Four appearance... Two-time Associated Press
All-American...Won first-team All-American
honors from Kodak, Basketball America and the
USBWA and second-team honors from AP, UPI and
College Sports Magazine as a junior... |
Stanford's all-time
leading scorer with 2,215 points... Scored
a career-high and school record 44 points vs. USC
as a junior... Started 100 of Stanford's last
101 games over three seasons...
Named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team after
starting nine games... Helped the Cardinal to a 118-14
record (.894 winning percentage) during her
four-year career, never losing more than six
games in any single season...
Stanford won three consecutive Pacific-10
Conference titles with Starbird and four
consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, making
it to the Final Four in each of the last three
seasons only to be eliminated in the semifinal
game... Throughout her four years,
averaged 16.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.3
assists per game. |

While Kate was
being recruited by Stanford, she always seemed to be sick... Every
time Tara VanDerveer (the head Coach) called Kate on the
phone, Kate always had a cold... On her recruiting visit, Kate was sick,
her stomach was hurting, and she didn't feel good... She fell
asleep during ...the football game they took her to... Although
Tara had never seen Kate play in person, she gave her a
full scholarship anyway... Tara had seen a tape of Kate playing,
and Kate scored so much Tara couldn't argue with that... Kate
chose Stanford over the University of Washington because
stature in academics and basketball... Kate
keeps in touch with all of her former Stanford teammates... Kate was
originally going to major in Chemical Engineering, but
sometime after her sophomore year decided to switch to
Computer Science... When Kate arrived on Campus as a
freshman, she was on crutches with a sprained ankle and a
cracked kneecap... needless to say Tara wasn't too happy... Kate's
Knee seemed to heal by itself... The coach was holding a
sprinting contest and Kate gave it a shot... She beat
everybody event though Tara didn't think kate would make
through the first round... Tara had to challenge somebody to beat
herstarbirdfan Kate often reminded Tara "Don't let
the frame fool you"...
Kate stayed for summer school to
graduate on time...As a senior Kate began averaging 20.1
points... That was the first time since VanDerveer
arrived at Stanford that any player had averaged twenty.
